Basketball Recruiting 101

“Being good enough” is the most important question that you have to answer. There are a few things you should know before you answer it though.

These questions will help you start your recruiting process. Remember the answers to these questions can change as time goes on.

Coaches are always giving players the eye test. If you pass it, you have an advantage. If you don’t, the next part becomes even more important.

At the end of the day, coaches want to know if you can play. This skills evaluation will help you figure out where you stand, whether you pass the eye test or not.

You need to answer them very carefully before you move forward. Just because you answer the question one way today, doesn’t mean you can’t change your mind later.

Eligibility rules are always changing. Every level has different criteria that you have to meet in order to be eligible to play and qualify for scholarships. Let’s find out if you’re eligible.

You may or may not have heard of the “Clearinghouse” before. Both the NCAA and NAIA have rules that regulate who is allowed to compete and receive athletic scholarships.

Do you understand how important video is for basketball players during the recruiting process? Coaches always prefer to watch players play live and in person, but there are always limits on the number of coaches that can see you in person.

Campus visits can be a huge part of the recruiting process. They are opportunities to get up close and personal with a potential college or university. This lesson will make you start thinking about visiting campuses.

Everything you say and do is part of your brand. People are always watching you.  Creating your brand takes time, but ruining it can take seconds. You have to be very aware of your brand.

Athletic Scholarships work differently at every level for every sport and with every school. This lesson will discuss how basketball scholarships work at different levels, assuming you are eligible to receive a scholarship at that level.

Choosing which schools to contact is not easy. You should probably do some general research into any school before you contact them.

fter doing research, you might find out your dream school isn’t exactly all it’s cracked up to be.  You might end up getting an offer from their biggest rival and not them.  The recruiting process is never very straight forward, but you can save yourself time if you do a little research before hand.

Maybe coaches have seen you play before and maybe they haven’t.  Regardless of this, you just sent emails out to coaches. When you contacted them, especially if you included a highlight or game film you just got exposure! Hopefully, it is good and you made a great first impression.

A lot of players are led to believe that they aren’t getting recruited because they aren’t getting enough exposure. While, in a few instances this maybe true, the majority of the time lack of exposure is not the problem! They are actually getting exposed.

Many players are afraid of talking to coaches because they don’t know what to say. Talking to coaches should be easy if you have the right mindset.  

Unofficial campus visits are visits in which the student-athlete is responsible for all the costs of the visit. The number of unofficial visits you can take is unlimited.

Official campus visits are visits in which the college or university pays for part or all of the costs of the visit. Official visits are fun, but you should be prepared.

Understanding your path is hard. It seems to be a common theme in society that just because you have a dream and you work hard that it will be a straight line to your end goal.

Choosing a school is the time where all of your hard work has finally paid off. It is an exciting time; and a time that you should not take for-granted because not many people get to choose. Enjoy the process but make sure that you are informed when it comes decision time.
